What are we doing?
We’re making improvements to Bulwell Bus Station as part of our Transforming Cities programme to make using public transport even easier.
Before the pandemic, around 1.1 million passenger trips were made every year from the bus station, and currently more than 600 bus services run through it every day. The Bulwell Bus Station Improvements project will make the station more enjoyable and efficient for bus operators and passengers alike.
On 16 January 2023 works will begin to install brand-new bus shelters with three different types of built in seating to provide a better waiting environment for passengers. The existing bus stops on the north and south side of Vere Street will be relocated to the central island to form a more efficient saw-tooth arrangement, which will provide better traffic flow for buses, and more space for pedestrians on the footpaths on both side of the central island.
The bus station will also become more environmentally friendly and sustainable through solar powered bus shelter lighting, and new greenery introduced in planters along the footpaths to increase biodiversity.

The scheme will have several benefits:

- Improved accessibility for wheelchairs
- Multiple seating options that cater to varying mobility needs
- Improved efficiency for bus operators
- A more welcoming feel and overall environment
What happens next?
- Monday 16 January 2023: The bus station closes to the public, construction begins, and temporary bus stops are installed on Main Street and Bulwell High Road. Access to the public toilets and a footpath through Vere Street will remain open for pedestrians.
- May 2023: New bus station reopens to the public
Temporary Bus Stops
All buses that serve Bulwell Bus Station will have temporary stops for the duration of the works.
Locallink L14 will terminate at the temporary stop on Main Street, adjacent to the bus station (the same stop as NCT’s 68 and 69 services towards Snape Wood). For the Locallink L14 service into Nottingham city centre, you can board the bus on Main Street or use Bulwell Market (BU10).

This project is part of Nottingham and Derby’s Transforming Cities programme. Working in partnership, Nottingham City and Derby City Councils secured £161 million from the Department for Transport to invest in local transport infrastructure that will improve sustainable transport, support growth, and encourage more low carbon journeys.
