A new cycle path opened in time for National Bike Week this week (9 – 17 June) across the former Island site near Nottingham Station to link up the eastern and western cycle corridors. 🚲
The path connects City Link with London Road and offers a more direct route for cyclists travelling to and from the east of the city.
In addition to this, a toucan crossing has been built across Manvers Street to help cyclists and pedestrians across this busy road and onto the recently completed cycle path along Daleside Road A612.
Councillor Dave Liversidge, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport said: “One of the ways we can support Nottingham’s growth is to offer citizens more transport choice. By improving quiet routes – cycling and walking can become a more attractive travel option.
“This new path will help link up two major cycle routes and offer more options for east/west journeys. Where the path meets London Road, we have worked to optimise the traffic lights – ensuring that we can keep Nottingham moving at this key intersection, whether that be drivers, cyclists or pedestrians.”
Hugh McClintock from cycling campaign group Pedals said: “This path provides a much needed link from the new paths on Daleside Road to the city centre and Nottingham Station. Better cycling infrastructure helps to give more people the confidence to start cycling, and provides a safer, more pleasant journey for those who already do. If you’re thinking about starting to cycle – National Bike Week is a good time to start!”
Christopher Ware of Conygar Investment Company PLC (who own the site) said: “We have been working with Nottingham City Council to bring about the construction of this path – which will give people a more direct route from the east of the city. Big changes are coming soon for this area of the city and improving cycling connectivity will be an important part of that.”
The path will act as a temporary link across the site until the redevelopment of the Island site in the next few years. As part of this redevelopment a more permanent path will be constructed.
This project is funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership as part of Nottingham City Council’s Cycle City Ambition Programme Council’s Cycle City Ambition Programme.
