Over 4,000 streetlights replaced with new LEDs across Nottingham

We’re on track to replace 34,300 lights with new energy saving LED (light-emitting diode) sources.

Nottingham City Council successfully bid for £7m from the Government’s Levelling Up fund, which will be used for this work. The ambitious programme began in July, starting with Sherwood and Clifton. LEDs will be installed ward by ward until completion in March 2024.  

Over the last few months, the team have already replaced over 4,000 lights, which totals around 40 lights per day! The new LED streetlights: 

• Are more energy efficient – which will help support the goal to make Nottingham carbon-neutral by 2028 
• Save money – by reducing maintenance costs and using less electricity 
• Increase the colour rendering index (CRI), which will help improve visibility on the roads.

What is LED street lighting? 

LED stands for light-emitting diode. The LED light source is highly efficient and environmentally friendly.  

When will the replacement work start and finish?

The installation of new LED lights started in July 2022. The work is expected to be completed by March 2024. 

How many lights will be replaced?

In total 34,300 lights will be replaced.

How are replacements being prioritised?

The programme is very short and the lights are being fitted in an order to reduce maintenance and replacement of old units before the LED lights are fitted.

How much will this cost?

This project is fully funded via the Levelling Up fund. We have received £7m from the Government to complete all the work.

Annual electricity consumption of streetlights will come down, saving in the region of £1.3m a year, with an additional saving of around £169,000 a year in maintenance costs.

Who is doing the work?

The replacement programme is being undertaken on the council’s behalf by Tay Valley Lighting, working with their sub-contractor Enerveo.

Will the work cause much disruption?

Replacing the lights is a relatively quick process and no digging in the street is required. There will be no interruption to power (electricity supplies) in your street.
