- Start: 29 July 2019
- End: 4 November 2019
The westbound section of Canal Street will close from London Road roundabout towards Broadmarsh from Monday 29 July for 14 weeks for essential gas replacement works. Travel east from the Broadmarsh area to London Road roundabout will remain unaffected during these works.
These works have been scheduled for the start of the summer holidays to keep disruption to a minimum, as roads are usually quieter, and after the Cricket World Cup at Trent Bridge. Access to Trent Street and Station Street will be maintained via a right turn from Canal Street eastbound.
Following gas leaks which closed Canal Street in 2017, Cadent Gas identified the need to replace the gas mains under Canal Street. While these works take place, other utility works required for the Broadmarsh redevelopment plan will be undertaken.
Nottingham City Council has undertaken work to improve other roads and alternative routes around the Broadmarsh area and the city as a whole to make sure traffic flows as smoothly as possible during these works.
How will this affect through traffic?
The Southern Relief Route
- Canal Street will be closed westbound (From London Road to the Broadmarsh). Eastbound traffic will remain unaffected.
- The southern relief route has been improved as part of the Broadmarsh works and will be the main diversion route for the Cadent gas works. This involves turning off London Road onto Queens Road then onto Waterway Street and right onto Wilford Street. Here you can pick up routes via Castle Boulevard of Maid Marian Way.
Planning alternative routes
If you are usually use Canal Street as a through route then you may wish to reconsider your journey during the works. A map of alternative routes can be found here.
How much disruption will there be?
We will communicate through traditional and social media and with physical signs on the road about the forthcoming closure to try and minimise the disruption, but as people adjust to the new routes there is a possibility of disruption and longer journey times. We would urge people to plan their route to avoid potential congestion.
For residents of access to Sherrifs Lodge Car Park – Works of this scale will disrupt residetns close to the works the most, but access will be maintained. Similarly those using Sherrifs Lodge Car Park will still be able to park there as usual. However, due tot he closure at the London Road roundabout, this may extend your journey round the Southern Relief Route to rejoin Canal Street toward London Road to be able to access your home or Sherrifs Lodge. Cadent Gas and Nottingham City Council will restore access as usual as early as possible.
Taxis on Trent Street or National Express and Megabus on Stations Street – Roadworks have taken place to allow access to Trent Street and Station Street by turning right from Canal Street. As there will be no oncoming traffic due to the works, this should be a straightforward manoeuvre. Access to the taxi rank, offices and bus stops on Stations Street will be maintained throughout the works.
Pedestrians – The works will only affect the road so pavements and pedestrian routes will not be affected.
Parking on Canal Street – For the duration of the works parking will be suspended along Canal Street including the Enterprise Car Club bay. Deliveries can be made by parking safely on the other sidde of the road and Enterprise Car Club will maintain their presence on Station Street.
