Improvements to Bull Close Road – January – Autumn 2026

In Progress

Nottingham City Council will be investing Local Transport Plan funding from Central Government to improve Bull Close Road and its pavements. This road provides access to businesses in the Dunkirk Industrial area but is currently not part of the adopted highway network.

 What’s happening

Between 5 January 2026 and continuing through autumn, works will include:-

  • Reconstruction of roads and pavements
  • Installation of new street lighting
  • Improved accesses to business premises
  • Informal pedestrian crossing points introduced with tactile paving
  • Improved drainage, including replacement of a 100m section of surface water main

Once all works have been completed, a new 20mph speed limit will be in place and no waiting at any time restrictions in areas that currently have no parking restrictions.

Phasing and Access

To maintain business and pedestrian access, works will be delivered in 10 phases under rolling road closures. Each phase will take approximately 2–3 weeks and include kerb, drainage, and pavement reconstruction.

  • Phase 1: Thane Road to Aston Martin access
  • Phase 2: Aston Martin access to Goodman Retail northern access
  • Phase 3: Goodman Retail to PowerPark northern access
  • Phase 4: PowerPark northern access to Imperial Tobacco
  • Phase 5: Imperial Tobacco to Sunbelt Rentals*
  • Phase 6: Sunbelt Rentals to JK Foods HGV access
  • Phase 7: JK Foods HGV access to JK Foods Customer entrance
  • Phase 8: JK Foods Customer entrance to JK Foods Customer exit
  • Phase 9: JK Foods Customer Exit to ZF access
  • Phase 10: ZF access to Redfield Road

Vehicle access to all businesses will be maintained throughout however there will be diversions in place – these will be clearly signed on site and updates will be provided regularly.

Works will take place Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm.  Parking will be suspended on Abbeyfield Road for the duration of the works to accommodate diversion traffic; alternative parking arrangements are advised.

* Phase 5 includes the section of surface water main that needs to be replaced – this road closure may be in place for up to 6 weeks involving deep excavations in the road.

Once Phase 10 is nearing completion, reconstruction of the road will commence – more information will be provided nearer to the time.

We appreciate your cooperation during these essential improvements and will keep you informed as the project progresses.

Progress Update

Good progress has been made on the pavement reconstruction works, including upgrades to drainage using new kerb systems designed to remove water from the road more efficiently.  On the east side, the pavement has now been rebuilt between Thane Road and Sunbelt Rentals. Final surfacing will be completed once the new lighting columns have been installed.  On the west side, between Imperial Tobacco and Arnold Clark, the kerbs are being replaced with higher kerbs to help prevent vehicles from parking on the grass verge. These works are expected to be completed by 6 March.

Next Phase of Works

The construction site will move back towards the Thane Road junction to begin reconstruction of the west side pavement between Thane Road and Imperial Tobacco.

During this phase:-

  • Temporary traffic management, including road closures, will be required
  • Signed diversion routes will be in place
  • To support additional traffic using the diversion route, temporary surface improvements have been carried out to ensure the road remains safe and suitable for the increased vehicle flows
  • Businesses will receive regular updates about any temporary access changes

Upcoming Programme

Further details on the remaining works – including surface water main replacement and road reconstruction – will be published in the coming weeks.
