The Nottingham Clear Zone is a pedestiranised area in the city centre. Removing through traffic from the city centre has created a more pleasent environment for people to enjoy shopping, leisure and the night time economy.
The Clear Zone is broadly divided into two types of street.
- Restricted Access Streets – allowing vehicle access for Buses, Hackney Carriages (Taxis), Private Hire Vehicles and Blue Badge holders.
- Pedestrian Streets – generally restrict all types of vehicle access between 10am and 4.30pm and are subject to high numbers of pedestrian users.
Loading Vehicles are then allowed access on both types of street after 4.30pm and before 10am to service the various premises found in the city centre. Within the Clear Zone, on street parking is not available with the exception of Disabled User bays (Blue Badge holders), Taxi Ranks and Loading Bays.
Traffic restrictions – the restrictions help to minimise congestion by preventing unnecessary vehicle movements and help to improve the accessibility and safety of pedestrians. The reduction in the number of vehicles using the core of the city has also helped to historically reduce emissions in this area. These elements support the pedestrian friendly environment and encourage use of the city centre for retail, restaurant, night time economy and leisure uses.
