Some members of Nottingham Mencap were interviewed in this next episode of the Travel Well podcast. This video special starts off with some of the adapted bikes in action around the Harvey Hadden cycle track, followed by an interview where Nottingham Mencap talk about the opportunities the adapted bikes present and the difference it has made.
This takes place fortnightly at the Harvey Hadden track, providing access to the Travel Well adapted bikes for individuals who are unable to use conventional two-wheeled bicycles. It is facilitated by British Cycling.
The interview features several participants who share their experiences. Kayleigh, who had never cycled before, now enjoys the exercise and particularly likes the tandem bike because she can ride with a friend. Leoni, a staff member, explains that prior to this programme, their cycling group was limited to conventional bikes, which excluded many individuals with physical disabilities, coordination, or balance issues.
The introduction of adapted bikes, such as the side-by-side model, has been transformative. It has enabled individuals like Oliver, who was previously afraid to cycle, to participate and have fun. Leoni shares a particularly moving story of a young lady with cerebral palsy who, after progressing from a tandem and a side-by-side bike, is now able to ride an electric trike independently—a milestone that brought her to tears of joy.
The side-by-side bike is noted as the most used and effective, as it allows individuals with physical impairments or those who need support to ride alongside a friend or staff member, ensuring their safety while still experiencing the joy and freedom of cycling.
