Today on Social Prescribing Day, we’re celebrating the power of active travel social prescribing and the many ways it supports people to live happier, healthier and more connected lives. Social prescribing connects people to activities, groups and support that improve health and wellbeing.
Here in Nottingham, Travel Well is encouraging people to be more active, be that walking, wheeling or cycling – with over 4,000 Travel Well activity places taken up to date.
Throughout 2026, Travel Well is partnering with five community organisations across the current focus areas – Aspley, Beechdale, Bilborough, Bulwell, Sneinton, St Ann’s and Strelley – where increasing access to walking, cycling and wheeling can make a real difference to health and wellbeing.
Travel Well continues to offer a healthcare referral route, enabling GPs, healthcare professionals and social prescribers to refer residents to community based activities that support physical and mental health, giving people personalised support and structured pathways into the activity.
The new network of Travel Well Community Active Travel Hubs creates another layer of connection. Spaces where residents can discover activities, build confidence, and feel part of something local. These hubs will help open the door to more walking groups, cycle training, led rides and community based support, strengthening the role of social prescribing in everyday life. Travel Well is about lasting, healthy change and building walking and cycling into daily life. These hubs enrich the programme by making it easier for people to take those first steps.
The community organisations involved are:
- Evolve
- Diversify
- Nottingham Muslim Women’s Network
- The Renewal Trust
- The Toy Library
Nic Williams, Community Lead at The Renewal Trust, said: “We are excited to be working with Travel Well and now offering an enormous range of free walking and cycling activities to residents here at The Renewal Trust. The calendar is packed! There’s so much going on from children’s learn to ride, group cycle rides, adult cycle courses, Dr Bikes and community walks, led walks and so much more. Head down to Cherry Lodge at King Edward Park, check our website or socials or the Travel Well Calendar to find out what’s coming up.”
