The Walk Wheel and Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) are nearing the end of the second phase of the jobseekers bike project which began 15 months ago. The team, in partnership with Nottingham City Council, are helping jobseekers in Nottingham by providing travel assistance and free refurbished bikes.
The bikes and support are intended to help give jobseekers the skills and confidence to use the bike to travel to job interviews, work, training, education, or volunteering opportunities.
Recently they have been focusing on delivering 1-2-1 rides and bike deliveries, and working with community organisations.
Some highlights of phase two of the project include:
• Giving away 55 bikes to jobseekers
• Delivering 3 women-only bike distributions in partnership with Women In Tandem
• Distributing ten bikes to refugees through Belong
• Running five 1-2-1 bike rides to help clients get riding on their new bikes
A participant said: “I think projects like this are really great. I needed a bike and thought there was no way I’d be able to get one at a good enough price. Then I got your email and the next thing I’ve got a bike, a helmet, everything I need! I’m just really pleased that I was able to access this project, it’s going to really help me as I get back into work.”
