West Yorkshire Mayor visits Nottingham to explore award-winning trams

August 7, 2024

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, met with Nottingham City Council to learn more about how Nottingham has developed its award-winning tram network (NET).

NET is a fundamental part of the city’s public transport network, accessible to 30% of the Greater Nottingham population. The tram serves 20 of the 30 largest employers in Greater Nottingham which are all within 800m of a tram stop, widening the catchment area for employers in accessing their potential workforce.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority are looking to develop two tram lines in West Yorkshire, between Leeds City Centre and Bradford, and between St James Hospital and the White Rose shopping centre (via the city centre) so were keen to hear about Nottingham’s experience.

Here are some facts about our amazing tram network:

  • There are over 50 tram stops
  • The trams run every 7 – 10 minutes (and even more regularly in the city centre!)
  • Since the first tram line opened in 2004, public transport use in Nottingham has grown from 67m (2004) to nearly 80m
  • There are seven free park and ride sites with a total capacity of over 5,000 spaces
  • The tram provides access to around 1270 workplaces
  • The QMC hospital is the first in the country to be served directly by a tram service
  • Over 32km of track make up Nottingham’s tram network
  • Each of Nottingham’s trams carry the equivalent of nearly three double-decker buses or 170 cars
  • Each one of our trams is named after a local hero of the past or present

Nottingham City Council Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications, Councillor Neghat Khan said: “Nottingham is a renowned leader in excellent public transport – a city where it’s easy to get around in a green and affordable way. It was a pleasure to host the Mayor of West Yorkshire, showcasing our exceptional tram network and offering support as they plan to develop their own tram system in the near future.”

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said: “We have ambitious plans in West Yorkshire to create a Mass Transit system which will improve connectivity and unlock economic growth.

“It was great to see Nottingham’s tram network and I thank colleagues at the council for inviting us and sharing their knowledge.”
