Hucknall Road

Hucknall Road & Arnold Road Public Transport and Cycling Improvements

In Progress

Working in partnership, Nottingham and Derby City Council secured £161 million from the Department for Transport to invest in local transport infrastructure to improve sustainable transport. In line with this Transforming Cities programme of improvements, Nottingham City Council will be commencing the next phase of improvements to Hucknall Road with junction improvements at Arnold Road.

In order to minimise disruption to local residents, road users and bus services, the junction
improvement works have been split into three phases.

Latest update 15th May 2024:

  • Refuge improvement work near the Riber Crescent junction begin this weekend, which will require 3-way temporary lights on Saturday and Sunday (18/05 and 19/05).
  • We will then be undertaking the Riber Crescent junction improvement works under temporary lights during the school half term holidays w/c 27/05.
  • Works will begin on the main junction in July.

Phase 1: East side widening from 15th April 2024

Phase 1 involves extending the footpath on the east side of Hucknall Road into the former
railway cutting and widening the road on the east side ready for the junction improvements in
the phase 3 programme of works.

To allow us to carry out this first phase of work, there will be:

  • A temporary footpath closure on the east side of the Hucknall Road/Arnold Road junction
  • A diversion will be in place and clearly signed
  • Parking restrictions will be introduced on the east (railway cutting) side of Hucknall Road.
The number of traffic lanes will remain unchanged

Phase 2: Construction of dedicated parking bays on the west side of Hucknall Road and Riber Crescent junction improvement

  • Footpath width will be reduced on the west side of Hucknall Road and the road outside
houses widened in order to accommodate a safe width for parking without the footpath
    being blocked
  • Path width on the east side increased and path improved to encourage cycles to use this
    side of the road
  • Work will be carried out in sections, to allow a proportion of parking to remain available
    at all times
  • Parking bays will be marked on completion of this phase of work, but residents’ parking
scheme not introduced until a later date
  • Number of traffic lanes remains unchanged

Phase 3: Hucknall Road / Arnold Road junction changes and traffic signal replacement Summer 2024

During the third phase of work:

  • Parts of the junction will be closed during the works and diversions in force. Alternative
routes will always be available, and as much notice as possible of closures/diversions
    will be given
  • Traffic signals at the junction will be replaced
  • Roads will be resurfaced
  • New lane arrangements and carriageway restrictions will come into effect on completion
of this third phase of works

On completion of this third phase of works, the new residents parking scheme will come
into effect.

Our working hours will be 07.30-16.00 weekdays and Saturdays 08.30-13.00. We apologise
in advance for any inconvenience or disruption caused.
