These works are designed to improve bus reliability, make bus stops more accessible for passengers and help reduce congestion at known traffic bottlenecks along the route.
When will the works take place?
Works are due to start on Monday 24 August and are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.
To carry out the works safely, temporary traffic lights will be in operation during parts of the programme and some on-street parking will need to be suspended temporarily in specific locations while construction is taking place. Access for residents, businesses and pedestrians will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible, and all traffic movements will continue to be accommodated.
Why are these improvements needed?
The improvements are being introduced in response to issues affecting bus services along the route, particularly around the SN15 bus stop on Colwick Road (outside the Food Junction), where illegally parked vehicles regularly obstruct access to the stop. This can prevent buses from pulling up alongside the kerb, making it more difficult for passengers, particularly wheelchair users, people with pushchairs and those with mobility impairments, to board and alight safely.
The scheme will also address sections of deteriorated carriageway and improve the operation of key junctions where congestion can affect bus reliability and general traffic flow.
What improvements are being made?
New bus stop platform at the SN15 stop on Colwick Road
The footway outside the Food Junction will be widened to create a dedicated bus stop platform, allowing buses to stop directly alongside the kerb and improving accessibility and passenger safety.
Road surface improvements
Areas of carriageway affected by rutting and potholes, including a substantial section between Ladysmith Street and Kimberley Street, will be repaired to improve safety, ride quality and long-term durability.
Bus stop clearways
Bus stop clearway markings will be introduced at bus stops along the route to help keep them free from obstruction and ensure buses can access stops safely and efficiently.
Junction resurfacing and traffic management improvements
The junction of Sneinton Boulevard, Meadow Lane, Sneinton Hermitage and Colwick Road will be resurfaced. New yellow box markings will also be installed to help prevent vehicles blocking the junction and causing congestion.
Removal of unnecessary guard railings
In line with current road safety recommendations, sections of guard railing will be removed where they are no longer required, helping to improve the appearance and usability of the street environment.
Renewal of road markings
Existing road markings between Manvers Street and Daleside Road will be refreshed, including junction protection markings at side roads.
Importantly, the bus stop clearways complement existing parking restrictions and will not result in any permanent loss of on-street parking provision.
Overnight works and road closures
The junction resurfacing works are expected to take place towards the end of the construction programme and will likely require overnight working and temporary road closures to minimise disruption during the day.
Residents and businesses affected by these works will receive further information about the timings, traffic management arrangements and any diversion routes in advance of this phase of the scheme.
