Trent Bridge Waterproofing Scheme
Nottingham City Council has submitted a bid to the Department for Transport (DfT) Structures Fund to secure funding for essential waterproofing works to Trent Bridge.
The proposed scheme will help protect the structural integrity of the historic Grade II* listed bridge by preventing water and road salt from reaching the underlying structure. Together with planned maintenance and inspections, the works will help reduce corrosion, extend the bridge’s lifespan and minimise future maintenance costs.
Why the work is needed
Completed in 1871, Trent Bridge is one of Nottingham’s most important and recognisable transport links. As a 155-year-old structure, ongoing investment is required to preserve the bridge and ensure it continues to serve residents, businesses and visitors for many years to come.
Funding
The total cost of the project is estimated at £4.4 million.
Nottingham City Council has proposed a 12.5% local contribution (£550,000) through its structures maintenance capital programme and is seeking the remaining 87.5% (£3.85 million) from the DfT Structures Fund.
Programme
Subject to funding approval, work could begin in summer 2028 and be delivered over two phases during 2028 and 2029.

The DfT Structures Fund has attracted significant interest from local authorities across the country, highlighting the strong demand for investment in essential transport infrastructure.
