About
With an active lifestyle having a massive impact on both mental and physical wellbeing, Nottingham City Council’s Travel Well project aims to help support people to build activity into their daily lives for lasting healthy changes.
Nottingham City Council expressed interest to become part of a national trial. It was selected and became one of 11 areas where it has been identified that people switching to more active lifestyles can make a real difference. The trial will give healthcare professionals and social prescribers the ability to refer patients to services that promote walking, cycling and wheeling delivered within the community.
The aim is to support people to become more active, manage mental and physical wellbeing, manage long-term health conditions or address social isolation.
The project will take place around Aspley, Beechdale, Bilborough, Bulwell, Sneinton, St Ann’s and Strelley. Here is a useful map showing the Travel Well focus areas.

Travel Well – News and information
Travel Well have launched a new podcast series. This gives a deeper look into some of the walking and cycling activities and the impact they have had. All episodes can be viewed here or seen on the related pages at the very bottom of this page.
Travel Well interviewed Councillor Dinnall to ask how she keeps active and the benefits of riding her bike. We spoke too with Councillor Radford and asked how he incorporates walking and cycling into his busy schedule.
Travel Well’s active travel community connector Charlotte and a patient she had referred to a Sustrans walking activity recently went on BBC Radio Nottingham.
And something you may find inspiring! A recent piece in The Guardian explores how walking in cities can be “just as good as a stroll in the countryside”.
Are you searching for Travel Well Bingo Cards? There are a range of cards which can be download suitable for different ages and abilities. Can you mark them all on your walk?
Travel Well Community Grant Scheme
Community organisations and local groups can apply for a grant to directly cover the costs of items to help encourage and enable walking and / or cycling. Travel Well focuses on the target areas approximately around Aspley, Beechdale and Bilborough, Bulwell and Bulwell Forest as well as St Ann’s and Sneinton. Examples of assets could be raincoats, D-locks, pool bikes or lockers. To find out more, please visit the Travel Well Community Grant Scheme page and if suitable, please submit an expression of interest form.
How are we reviewing that Travel Well is working?
We will be monitoring each of the Travel Well activities to understand what works and what doesn’t work. Travel surveys will be issued to people taking part in selected activities and results reported back to Active Travel England.
As well as this, we have been collecting a series of case studies. As part of this, there is a Travel Well podcast series. Hear what difference the walking or cycling provision has made to residents.
